HUNDREDS flocked to test out the beer on offer at a Southampton pub after a £1.6million revamp.

The Red Lion in Bitterne threw open its doors yesterday and Wetherspoon management said they were eager to build relationships with businesses in the area.

Natalie Owens, the pub’s manager, said: “I knew we would be busy, but even this has exceeded my expectations.

"We want to build and be a part of this valued community and with a turnout like we have had today, I don’t see why that can’t happen.

Natalie has been a manager with the chain for 11 years, and thinks the pub can thrive in its central Bitterne location.

She said: “It would be brilliant to see other businesses come into the area and help this community to build even more. Hopefully we’ll start to see some regular faces who enjoy their time here.

Area manager Chris Reich said: “After seeing the comments from the Echo in what Councillor Ivan White said, we are hoping to echo his sentiments and build here.

“Wetherspoon is a household name and we can now cater for even more customers on top of our Shirley and central Southampton pubs.”

The chain, which has 903 outlets across the UK and 25 in Hampshire, exchanged to purchase the pub in August 2015, with the previous landlord, Paul Cornwall, having been at the pub for 37 years.

The upstairs has also been refurbished, giving the building extra room as it launches its food menu into the pub.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “After our £1.6 million investment and creating around 50 jobs, we’re thrilled to see the pub as busy as it is on opening day.

“We hope the pub will thrive and would love to see other businesses coming into Bitterne and support the community.”

Customers who visited the pub for their first pints said they were pleased with the refurbishment, and to see a big name in the community.

Rita May, 71, from Woolston said: “It’s very nice and I’m glad that we have come today. I think it will do well here and I look forward to coming back. The breakfast’s in particular will be popular I’m sure.”

Roger May, 72 from Woolston said: “It’s got a lovely feel to it and of course you can never go wrong with a beer!”

Betty Smirk, 70, from Woolston said: “I think the pub looks brilliant, and I expect it will be just as good as the other Wetherspoon’s I have been too. To see a chain like this in Bitterne is a big boost for residents.”
