A HAMPSHIRE motorway was closed yesterday after a dramatic high-speed car chase.

Three police cars were damaged during a pursuit of a black Honda Accord when it failed to stop after being seen driving dangerously at around 2am.

The photo shows how one police 4x4 ended up scraping along the central reservation with the skid marks visible behind it on the verge.

The Honda was forced to a stop on the hard shoulder by two other police vehicles. A tyre can be seen nearby. It was unclear which vehicle that came from.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police refused to give any further information on the incident and said the matter was referred to the force’s professional standards department “as per standard procedure.”

The eastbound M27 between junctions one and two at Cadnam had to be shut when one of the police vehicles hit the Honda in a high speed collision.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 58 year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving while under the influence of excessive alcohol.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital to be checked although it is understood there were no serious injuries.

Diversions towards Southampton through Totton were in place until lunchtime.

An investigation at the collision site lasted until lunchtime.
