Temporary traffic lights which caused travel choas on a major Hampshire road are to removed at peak times in a bid to ease congestion.

Drivers in Eastleigh have been facing long delays due to the roadworks being carried out at the junction between Derby Road and Southampton Road.

This morning there were 15-minute delays northbound back to junction 5 of the M27, while traffic is also built heading southbound.

The lights also caused delays on all three approaches to the junction yesterday, with southbound traffic queuing past Eastleigh train station onto Twyford Road.

The roadworks also affected major roads in Eastleigh, including Leigh Road and Bishopstoke Road.

The roadworks are being carried out by SGN to upgrade the service pipe to a property in Southampton Road and are due to last until Tuesday, April 11.

An SGN spokesman said: "For everyone’s safety while we are working, there are three-way temporary traffic lights in place at the junction of Southampton Road with Derby Road. The section of the road we're currently working in will be reinstated today, and the temporary traffic lights will be removed in time for this evenings rush hour.

The second section of our work will take place in the same location, in the southbound side of the road. Once again, temporary traffic lights will be in place, but they will be removed during peak travel times.

We understand that roadworks can be frustrating and would like to thank road users and local residents for their patience while complete our essential work."
