Like most events it’s all about bums on seats.

The World Naked Bike Ride is coming to Southampton for a six mile route taking in Portswood, Bevois Valley, the city centre including Oxford Street and The Avenue.

And it’s not just about getting naked. The event is also billed as a protest against oil dependency, and aims at showing the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads.

But any form of transport is encouraged - besides cars of course. Organisers also welcome skateboards scooters and rollerblades.

With the dress code “come as bare as you dare” organisers say “nudity makes a great statement, but if you’re more comfortable in a little clothing, that’s fine too.”

And body painting, adornment, customised bikes and other creative expression are all “strongly encouraged” with organisers also advising that “most wear footwear and bring bags to carry clothes.”

The first Southampton Naked Bike Ride took place in 2007 with 102 riders and no complaints from the police.

Since then there has been a ride almost every year with 156 riders in 2008 - and even some penny farthings leading the route in 2009.

The rides are held in cities around the world from Argentina to Venezuela, via Latvia, Japan and Israel.

Riders are asked to join the group at 6pm for a 6.30pm start on June 2 on the East Side of Southampton Common at the clearing next to Highfield Road opposite the junction with Omdurman Road.

Police have been notified. Organisers say simple nudity isn't illegal in the UK, but using nudity to intentionally cause harassment, alarm or distress may be illegal.
