A YOUNG girl who collects shoes for charity has been nominated for the St Georges Community awards – again.

Phoebee Corcoran is only 12 years old but she has been collecting shoes and clothes for the Hampshire Air ambulance for more than year.

This will be the second time she has been nominated for the Daily Echo St Georges Day Community Awards in collaboration with Southampton City Council.

Phoebee collects shoes for the HIOWAA’s Re-Use Ya Shoes campaign, which takes donated footwear of all kinds of conditions and sells them through reputable traders abroad.

She read an article in the Daily Echo asking readers to donate old shoes and became inspired to start a collection on her own.

The award ceremony will be taking place on May 23 and will celebrate Southampton residents who have made the city a better place to live.

Both Phoebee and her mum Stephanie, an assistant practitioner in radiology at Southampton General Hospital, have dedicated hours of their time to fundraise and support others less fortunate than themselves.

The money raised then goes towards helping keep the HIOWAA in the air and performing its lifesaving work.

Phoebee’s nomination comes from her grandmother Jean Cookson, who said: “The air ambulance has currently flown 7,022 missions both day and night and carries a critical care team. It currently costs £9,000 a day to maintain this life saving service.

“Phoebee assists in keeping the air ambulance up in the air – I am so proud.”

The Stroud School student also wrote to The Queen and the Prime Minister asking for free fuel but as they are registered charities this isn’t possible .

Speaking to the Echo about her nomination, Phoebee said: “I collect shoes so we can keep the air ambulance in the air and it is also good fun; it’s really exciting to be nominated.”

Entries for the St Georges Day Community Awards are open until April 13.
