A 91-YEAR-OLD Hampshire widower died due to head injuries sustained after a fall, an inquest heard.

Denis Barnes of Kingsway, Chandler’s Ford, lived alone and was found lying on his bedroom floor by his son Richard Barnes.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he died on December 14.

The court in Winchester heard that Mr Barnes had previously sustained another fall earlier the year while coming home from casting his ballot in the referendum on June 23.

Pathologist, Dr Mark Walker, said that Mr Barnes had died of bronchial pneumonia which was a result of a severe head injury caused by a fall.

It is believed that Mr Barnes fell down the stairs of his house although it was not possible to say exactly when the fall occurred.

Senior coroner Grahame Short gave a conclusion that the evidence showed that the death of Denis Walter Barnes, a retired structural engineer, was as a result of an accident in his home.
