Police have arrested a 32-year-old man after a crash on a Hampshire motorway left a motorcyclist fighting for his life.

The 51-year-old man was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries after the collision between a car and a motorbike on the A27.

Queues of more than three miles built up on the M27 after police closed the A27 eastbound between junction 12 of the M27 and the A27 Eastern Road junction at around 12.10pm on Sunday.

A diversion was put in place via Havant Road in Cosham from Junction 12 to the A27 Havant bypass.

Debris on the road also caused significant delays on the westbound carriageway, closing all but one lane until 5.15pm. The eastbound carriageway reopened at 6pm.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to call 101 quoting reference '44170160985', or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The 32-year-old man has since been released, but remains under investigation.
