A HAMPSHIRE shopping centre is the scene of a world record attempt for the largest balloon sculpture by one person.

Southampton-based balloon artist Ben Field is attempting to break the Guinness World Record at The Brooks Shopping Centre in Winchester using more than 10,000 balloons.

The 38-year-old from Mansbridge began his sculpture on May 1, and aims to create an enormous balloon waterfall at 85 feet high to get his name in the record books.

Ben is creating the sculpture in pieces in a shopping unit on the lower floor of the centre before using a lift to creates a cascading waterfall from the upper floor, which will flow between the balconies where the shops are located.

Ben said: “ It’s going well so far - I was delayed a bit because my balloon pump broke, which set me back.

“I did all the complicated stuff first and so it should be ok.

“Now the intricate stuff is finished it’s just a case of blowing up the rest of the balloons, which will take a while.”

Ben is attempting to beat the record holder for the largest modelling balloon sculpture by an individual - David Baker of Cincinnati, USA, who in 2015 created a sculpture of a giant bat.
