AN OVERNIGHT raid was carried out at a Hampshire shopping centre.

Burglars struck at Ernest Jones in the Swan Centre and police have launched an investigation.

The back door of the centre has been boarded up and the shutters of the shop were crowbarred open after the incident on Wednesday morning.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "We are investigating a burglary at the Swan Centre in Eastleigh.

"Officers were called to the shopping centre in Wells Place last night, at around 11.10pm.

"Entry was forced into the main Swan Centre building before Ernest Jones was targeted.

"The external shutter to the jewellers was damaged and the window to the store was smashed to gain entry.

"Several glass display cabinets were smashed and a quantity of jewellery was stolen.

"It is not clear at this time the value of the items stolen.

"Officers attended the scene last night and will be at the scene today as investigations continue.

"No arrests have been made at this stage."

Business owners at the centre spoke of their shock following the incident.

An Ernest Jones spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that at approximately 11pm [on Tuesday] there was a burglary in EJ Eastleigh.

"Our efforts are currently focused upon ensuring the welfare of our staff and we’ll be spending time with each of them to offer them counselling following this robbery.

"All of the stolen items possess serial numbers which means they will be completely traceable if any attempt at resale is made."

Jim Mellor, owner of family jewellers David Mellor & Sons who are next door to Ernest Jones on the ground floor of the Swan Centre said he understood that the raiders smashed in the entrance door, and got in that way.

Mr Mellor added: "I'm surprised they got in.

"There are security guards wandering round at night. I know because I've been here at night for shopfittings and thing."

A stallholder, who didn't want to be named, said: "It makes me feel unsafe. I have been working here every day.

"I don't know how they would get in with security walking round and cctv. The question must be answered by the security. There should always be one person behind the CCTV all the time.

"Obviously they are going to increase the security and everything now."

Athena Ace, 40, from Eastleigh said: "It makes me sick to my stomach.

"We're supposed to look after each other and be a caring society. But where's the respect?"

The Daily Echo has contacted Ernest Jones for comment.
