THESE are the stunning bird's-eye views of Southampton's new multi-million pound wastewater treatment.

The £63 million transformation of Southern Water's works is currently taking place in Woolston.

The images, taken by a remote-controlled drone earlier this year, capture the giant jigsaw-puzzle site, where a new treatment works is being built around the old existing works and a temporary area on land adjacent to the site.

The major redevelopment at Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works is being carried out by Southern Water's construction partner 4Delivery.

Project manager at Southern Water, Richard Hodgson, said: "This is a complex construction project, the end result of which will be a state-of-the art wastewater treatment works which will serve the Woolston community long into the future."

Since work began in late 2014, the redevelopment has carried out more than 2,000 crane lifts, placed more than 5,500m3 of concrete and moved in excess of 4,700 tonnes of excavated material.

A tower crane has been helping workers access different areas across the site, which serves more than 60,000 people.

Specialist contractors are now installing the mechanical process equipment and a concrete specialist is currently focused on installing pre-cast structures.

Water tests on the tanks are in progress to ensure there will be no leaks once wastewater is added.

The previous works were built in 1966 and were in need of modernisation.

The company has built a new treatment works in Victoria Road, Woolston to ensure it can continue to treat wastewater from the area during demolition of the existing works and construction of the permanent site.

Demolition of the redundant structures from the old site were completed in spring last year with building work starting in the autumn.

The scheme is due to complete in 2019.
