EVERY summer Hampshire residents of all ages are warming up, stretching and training to take part in various sports days and events.

July 1926 was no different.

The Supermarine Aviation Works were due to stage their annual Supermarine regatta when it was postponed due to torrid weather conditions.

Rubber dinghies were collected from their overseas flying boats, and were eventually put to good use when they managed to get out on them.

A Royal Mail Steam Packet liner was the sports ground for many activities that month including egg and spoon races and deck tennis. The children were even kept busy with a messy bun eating competition.

There was also a blindfold bottle race and mock horse racing.

A rather unique spin was put on bicycle racing at the Polygon based Hurst Leigh School sports day on the County Ground - participants picked up potatoes with long forks whilst cycling!

The Eastleigh Railways Orphanage sports day was well attended, with displays from various organisations as well as athletics.

There were even shows for dogs as well as the highly contested 100-yard sprint.
