LEGAL action is being taken to remove a group of travellers who set up an unauthorised camp in a Hampshire town.

Hedge End Town Council has taken action against the group which has set up its camp on grassland at Greta Park.

It is understood that the group of around 20 caravans arrived at the site on Tuesday night.

The land is owned by the town council which is now working to solve the issue.

It is not known if it is the same group who pitched up at the park and ride in Winchester on Tuesday.

Cllr Jerry Hall said: “I want something to happen immediately. We need to put up very secure barriers and CCTV cameras to protect the area.”

A resident who lives nearby but does not wish to be named said: “It’s very annoying. It will cost lots of taxpayers’ money now.

“It would be cheaper in the long term to invest the money to secure the area with proper gates. Everyone in Hedge End wants something to be done as soon as possible.”
