A teenager had her locks cut off for charity after her great grandfather lost his battle with cancer.

Taylor Sutherland, who goes to The Hamble School, braved the shave to support Macmillan Cancer Support (MCS) and the Huntington's Disease Association (HDA) - charities close to the 14-year-old's heart.

The Year 10 student initially decided to fundraise for HDA as her dad has the disease and there is a 50 per cent chance she could have it too.

But after her great-grandfather passed away earlier this month and another close friend died last year, she decided to also raise money for MCS.

As part of her hair trimming escapades, a family fun day was also arranged on July 22 at the 19th Itchen North Scout Hall in Warburton Road, Thornhill.

Stalls, raffles and a host of activities were enjoyed throughout the afternoon.

Mum, Michelle Russell said she was "proud of her daughter" and that she couldn't believe she had actually gone through with the haircut.

She said: ""Taylor's hair is so big, it's what she is known for. Looking at her now and knowing what she has achieved is amazing.

"She's raised so much money for charity. All of her friends and family have been brilliant. It's been so positive. Another youngster has even contacted Taylor online to say she was so inspired by Taylor they were going to have their hair cut off for charity."

So Taylor's exploits has raised more than £1,300. Her hair has also been donated to The Little Princess Trust, which helps children with cancer going through treatment that causes hair loss.

"It's all been very overwhelming," Michelle added.

"I can't believe she actually went through it but it's just wow.

"We've been so lucky that so many people supported her and we're just so thankful for everyone that helped out and donated prizes.

"We couldn't have done it without them."
