HUNDREDS of people are expected to take part in a popular regatta in Hampshire.

The Bursledon Regatta, which has run for the past 150 years, is set to return on Saturday, August 26.

Crowds are set to turn out to Elephant Boatyard and watch a variety of races including canoe and rowing.

The paddle board race and the gig race will kick start the event from 12.30pm, with regatta events from 2pm.

Several other activities are also planned for the day in a bid to entertain residents.

Children will have the opportunity to showcase their fancy dresses inspired by classic movies, which this year is the theme of the event, at a parade at 2.15pm.

The water carnival and its parade will take place from about 3.30pm, with a prize giving event at 6pm.

Drinks and food will be available throughout the day including a hog roast in Elephant Boatyard.

The popular event is set to end with a torchlight parade of dinghies at 8.45pm and a fireworks display at about 9pm.

The regatta is organised by the Swanwick,Bursledon and Warsash Regatta committee.

Peter Falconer, from Bursledon, is one of the organisers and said final preparations are now being made.

He said: “The regatta is a tradition. This is a water based community and it’s important to retain the tradition of events on the water.

“It’s also a chance for people from those villages to come together on the day and feel part of one big river based community.”

The event is free and open to everyone who would like to take part in the regatta or enjoy the regatta atmosphere.

This year there will also be an area for children with several activities planned for them, including face painting.

The event is expected to finish at 9.30pm.
