CALLS have been taken for people to cover up in the sun after new figures have shown a sudden rise in the number of skin cancer deaths.

In Hampshire, the number of deaths increased from 43 in 2005 to 66 in 2014.

The research, commissioned by Cancer Research UK, also found that 50 per cent more men than women forget to protect their skin and 75 per cent more men than women were not worried about getting sunburnt.

Dr Elizabeth Mearns, NHS England Wessex medical director, said: “Skin cancer deaths are still rising in Hampshire. It’s crucial to cover up from the sun – not just for yourself but also your family.”
