TWO men have been rushed to hospital after a two-car crash on a major Southampton road.
The collision, which occurred on The Avenue near the Cowherds Pub at around 6.15pm last night, causing delays in both directions.
Firefighters had to free the drivers of both vehicles, who have now been taken to hospital.
The northbound side of the road was blocked, with police directing traffic.
Station manager Andy Weeks said: "What we've got is a road traffic collision involving two cars.
"In each car the drivers were trapped, and they were the only people in the cars.
"The police will be investigating how they ended up on the pavement, but no one else was injured.
"We had three engines at the scene, one from Eastleigh, one from Hightown and one from St Mary's.
"We have worked together with other emergency services. The police have protected us by closing off the road as we extricated the two drivers.
"The two male drivers have now been taken to hospital."
