HUNDREDS of Hampshire pupils silenced for minutes to help people with cancer.

There were 350 children involved in a sponsored silence at Berrywood School yesterday (March 22).

For the second year in a row the Hedge End-based school decided to raise money in support of Breast Cancer Haven in Titchfield.

The youngest did not talk for two minutes while the oldest students from Year 3 managed to silence for 15 minutes.

Amy Spencer, teacher at Berrywood school, said: “ I am unbelievably proud of how well they have done. It was amazing.

“The event helps to understand how they can help other people and it’s all about working together.”

Money raised will support the charity which helps those battling breast cancer and their families and friends.

A charity representative from Titchfield attended the event too.

“It’s very good for children to support good causes and children understood that the charity supports not only patients but family and friends, ”Ms Spencer said.

As previously reported, the sponsored silence was run last year in support of Sally, the mother of one of the school students.

At the time Sally was battling breast cancer and her son Archie wanted to raise money to help her and organised the sponsored silence with the help of Berrywood school.

Last year pupils raised just more than £2,200 in just 15 minutes with sponsored silence on lunchtime.

The total amount of money raised this year has not been confirmed yet.
