A WOMAN was dragged along the ground as she fought to keep her bag from the clutches of a robber.

The victim was thrown to the ground after a hooded man attempted to grab the bag from her as she waited for a bus in Southampton’s Commercial Road, between Watts Park and the SeaCity Museum.

However, the woman clung on and was pulled along the pavement as the robber attempted to run away.

The man, described as 6ft and white, eventually let go.

The 22-year-old victim suffered grazes to the right hand side of her body in the struggle, which took place at around 10pm on Friday, September 22.

Police would like to hear from any witnesses who may have seen the incident or the man, who was wearing a dark hoody pulled up over his head, blue jeans and light trainers.

Detective Constable Kirsten Davey said: “This incident took place in the late evening after dark, but there were a few people around this area at the time.

“It has been reported to us that the man responsible left the area in the direction of the BBC building.

“Did you see anything, or anyone acting suspiciously?”

One person to comment on the attempted robbery is councillor for the area, Sarah Bogle.

The Bargate councillor said: “I wasn’t aware of this incident but it is a concerning one.

“I would always advise people to be vigilant and keep valuables as secure as possible when out and about.”

MP for the area, Royston Smith, added: “While it is undoubtedly brave and instinctive to protect one’s belongings it is not necessarily safe to do so.

“I am pleased to hear this lady was not too seriously injured and I wish her a speedy recovery.

“I hope the perpetrator is apprehended quickly and brought to justice.”
