THEY first started competing in the early 1920s, comprising players from Fawley, Blackfield, Holbury and Hythe.
Fawley and District Rugby Club became known as AGWI RFC in 1935 because of their association with Atlantic Gulf and West Indies Petroleum Company.
The team joined the RFU and played in a range of friendly matches against teams from Hampshire and Dorset.
After the Second World War, Esso took over AGWI and the team name changed again to reflect this.
Matt Dawson, who was part of England’s Rugby World Cup winning squad of 2003, played for the “Oilers”, as they’re sometimes referred to, when he was a youngster in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Their name changed once again in 2000, this time to Fawley RFC - a name which reflects the clubs heritage.
