One in five Southampton residents said they pack a tin of Heinz beans in their suitcase before their travels, a survey claims.

The figures, released as part of the 50th anniversary of the slogan  “Beanz Meanz Heinz” say fifty-four per cent of Southampton residents say they eat beans at least once a week, with a fifth tucking into them two or three times.

To celebrate Southampton's dedication to beans, the Heinz Beanz Bus will be at Westquay on Wednesday from 10am to 6pm.

Visitors will be able to get their hands on one of 50 limited edition cans with a ‘Beanz Meanz Soton’ label.

And if you REALLY love beans, you can get a can emblazoned with a word of your choice – anything from your own name, the name of a loved one, your favourite place or even a pets name.

Aaron Crinion, senior brand manager at Heinz Beanz, said: “Southampton loves beans, that’s for sure.”

The city ranked ninth on the bean-loving list, with Birmingham top.

According to the figures, Southampton’s favourite accompaniments for baked beans are cheese, followed by butter and spread, sausages and then bacon.
