More than 20 years ago the children from Eling Infant School skipped their morning lessons – although it was for a good cause.

Pupils, teachers and dinner ladies all got involved with the skipping marathon on October 1, 1997, with the children taking part and the adults supervising.

The cash racked up as skips were converted to money – all going towards new playground equipment.

Head teacher Wendy Collins said: “We had to borrow some ropes so there were enough to go round. The very little ones used a hoop so it was not difficult for them. Each class skipped in 15-minute sessions, then at the end we had a grand finale mass skip.

“We’re focusing on the playground this term, giving the children more to do at playtime.”

The kids enjoyed a treat at the end of the session when Carlo the ice cream vendor paid a visit in his van.
