PLANS to open a Christmas ice rink and Alpine-themed in Southampton city centre have been given the go-ahead.

An application to create a winter wonderland in a public plaza outside Westquay Shopping Centre was approved without debate at a meeting of city councillors .

The 730 square metre attraction, which will include a bar, cafe and changing rooms, is due to open on November 11.

The application had been opposed by Historic England, formerly English Heritage, which was concerned about the potential impact on the neighbouring Town Walls.

But the objectors found themselves skating on thin ice at a meeting of the council's planning and rights of way panel.

A report to members said: "The ice rink represents seasonal entertainment that will enhance the vitality and viability of the city centre during this temporary seven-week period.

"The attraction will draw both the local community and visitors to the city centre, supporting the local economy while allowing users to appreciate the walls close up."

The report said a two-metre wide exclusion zone would protect the ancient structure.

Historic England had objected on the grounds that the proposed rink was too big and would block views of the walls - described as a nationally-important heritage asset.

"While Historic England appreciate that the ice rink is a temporary attraction, many people visit this part of Southampton to understand its historical importance," said the report.

"Historic England think it is important that any entertainment in this area enhances rather than detracts from the significance of the Old Town and walls."

But the application, by operators SKATE, was given the nod.

When it was time for members to air their views on the proposal Cllr Nigel Hecks said: "Can't we just go to the vote - I'm sure everyone here is perfectly happy."

Planning officer Andrew Gregory said the historic walls "would provide a nice setting" for the rink.
