EIGHTY homes are currently without electricity after a fire.

SSE say its engineers have isolated the electricity supply in Elliot Close, Totton, following reports of smoke coming from its underground equipment.

The company says dozens of homes in the surrounding area will be without power until 5.30pm this evening, to allow engineers to make emergency repairs.

A spokesperson said: "We were called out to Elliot Close following reports of smoke coming from our underground equipment.

"Our engineers attended straight away and have isolated the supplies to 80 surrounding properties to allow us to carry out emergency repairs.

"We would like to apologise to all of those affected whilst we carry out these essential repairs.

"We expect all supplies to be restored by around 5.30pm."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue attended Elliot Close earlier today, following a call at around 12.30pm.

One crew from Redbridge attended, but took no action.

Firefighters left the scene an hour later, after handing the scene over to SSE engineers.
