A CITY centre hotel was evacuated this morning.

Staff and guests were cleared out of Travelodge on Castle Way at around 10.45am.

The evacuation was carried out after smoke started coming from an electrical box in the building's basement.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue sent three crews to the scene, one from Redbridge, one from St Mary's and another from Hightown.

However any signs of fire were out by the time they had arrived at the scene.

Crews used tactical ventilation devices to clear the basement of smoke.

They left the scene at 11.19am.

A spokesperson for Travelodge confirmed that the smoke was the result of a fault in an electrical box.

The spokespserson confirmed that the hotel was evacuated as a "precaution".
