FLOOD alerts and weather warnings have been issued for Southampton as heavy rain is expected to fall.

The Environment Agency says that half a month's rain has fallen in the last week, with 40mm recorded in Southampton.

The lower River Itchen is higher than normal and this means that lower tides will cause flooding.

An Environment Agency statement says: "For an hour either side of high tide, the river may come out of bank affecting the access road and car parking areas near the White Swan Pub and car garage at Mansbridge.

"Impacts should be minor and no property flooding is expected. Defence gates around the pub should be closed as a precautionary measure.

"The temporary flood barrier should be installed to help protect car parking areas. We continue to monitor levels."

The Met Office has put the r ain warning in place from 5pm on Sunday until 4pm on Monday and is urging residents to expect poor conditions.

Rain is forecast in Southampton from 9pm on Sunday until 1pm on Monday, and temperatures will hover around 6C.

A Met Office statement says: "Heavy rain is expected to affect parts of England and Wales.

"There is a chance of travel delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and flooding will likely lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures."
