BOSSES of a popular fast food chain were left in “shock” after a robber sprayed a mystery substance in the face of one of their employees during a frightening raid.

Specialist paramedics rushed to KFC in Bursledon Road on Monday night after a robber used an unknown substance to attack a checkout assistant.

Police said that the raider sprayed the liquid at the victim after threatening him and demanding money.

Officers say the victim suffered minor injuries, including a rash-like reaction.

Last night, police forensic teams were awaiting test results to identify the mystery liquid.

However, Hampshire Constabulary have ruled out the possibility of an acid attack, instead describing it as a “noxious substance”.

Yesterday, KFC bosses told of their shock about the incident.

A spokesperson for the fast food chain said: “We are really glad no-one was hurt.

“We’re working closely with the local police as they investigate and are offering full support to all team members who were on shift that night.”

Southampton City Council ward member for Bitterne, Councillor Frances Murphy said: “I find it absolutely appalling.”

Councillor Murphy’s Bitterne colleague, Councillor John Jordan, also expressed concern at the incident.

He told the Echo: “These isolated incidents thankfully are rare.

“But this must have been terrible for the victim, particularly not knowing what it is.

“I have a lot of sympathy for the victim and I urge anyone with any information to come forward to the police.

“I hope this person is caught quickly.”

A hazardous area response team and paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service rushed to the incident, which occurred at 8.45pm.

Crews from Hightown and Winchester fire stations also attended the scene.

Police say no one has been arrested and enquiries are currently ongoing.

Officers say they are hoping to release CCTV images later today.
