A MOTHER of two from Southampton, is taking on the challenge of a lifetime to run this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon on April 22 and raise money for Diabetes UK.

Abby Mullins who is currently studying for a Nursing degree at Southampton University, was inspired to take on the gruelling 26-mile challenge for Diabetes UK after her father was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes thirty years ago.

The 31-year-old said: “My dad has had serious complications with his diabetes – he’s been in and out of hospital and is now registered partially blind. Sadly, he lost his driving licence four years ago because of his sight issues. I am running the marathon to raise awareness about diabetes and how serious it is.”

Every day, around 700 people are diagnosed with diabetes. When diabetes is not well managed it can lead to serious complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputations.

Abby added: “It’s surreal to be running the London Marathon after so many years of watching it on the TV and thinking how hard it looked! I’ve never been much of a runner so it’s doubly surprising! I’m excited about it. Life is busy with two young children and my studies but I’m somehow managing to fit in 10-mile runs when I can. My husband and four-year-old son will be there to cheer me on. I’ve already raised £400 but want to raise much more so please sponsor me!”

Laura Crow, Diabetes UK’s Fundraising Manager in Southampton, said: “Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without the determination and generosity of our incredible fundraisers.

“We are extremely grateful to Abby for her hard work – running a marathon is no mean feat! The money raised will help fund ground-breaking research, care services and campaigns that can change the lives of those living with diabetes.”
