A POPULAR Greek restaurant will become a new hotel as its owners aims to keep the property’s family legacy alive.
Elias Restaurant, which was a favourite with foodies in Bargate, will be redeveloped after the Maraziotis family – who owned the restaurant and space on Canal Walk – were granted planning permission to turn it into a five space serviced accommodation.
Each room will have its own kitchenette, king-sized bed, en suite, and movie facilities. They are designed for businesswomen and men looking for short-term accommodation while working or staying within the city.
Peter Maraziotis, whose parents ran Elias, has come in as a project co-ordinator and believes the new hotel could create three jobs for locals.
He said: “There is a big gap for people who want the hotel experience and have their own comfort while they stay here. That’s what we’re aiming for here.
“Ideally in the future we will expand this further with more rooms. The nice thing about this is there is no need for 24-hour-a-day security as each room is self-contained.”
Mr Maraziotis added: “This is to help my family’s retirement. We want to create a family-run hotel which is perfect for those who spend time here.”
A management company will take over the general cleaning and maintenance of the hotel. No name has been chosen for the premises, but it is hoped it will open by the end of the summer.
The restaurant was initially set up by Mr Maraziotis’ father and grandfather. Mr Maraziotis owns Fusion Fitness, a gym in Fareham, as well as properties across the city.
