I WAS in the process of updating two of my house (landline) telephones but have discovered the following:
BT has stated it will shut its existing phone network by 2025 moving its customers to voice calls over the internet, a technology known as VoIP.
It confirmed the decision in an email to companies that provide landline services via BT's Openreach network. The company will now discuss with the industry the best way of moving to the new system.
I hope they make this information more public and advise both industry and commerce as soon as possible.
Many parts of the UK at present do not receive the internet or at best receive a slow broadband.
Many elderly people may not be able to afford a computer or subscribe to broadband.
Many mobile phones are unable to connect to emergency services.
Many imponderables need to be thought about which I have not had time to list.
Food for thought!
