A FLABBY feline from Southampton, who is more than twice the weight of an average cat, has reached the finals of the UK’s biggest pet slimming competition.

The eight-year-old colossal cat was chosen to compete against 12 other fat pets from across the UK, including other cats, dogs and even a rotund rat in the PDSA’s Pet Fit Club contest.

Weighing in at a whopping 10.1kg (22 lbs), Pen has eaten her way to one-and-a-half times the size she should be. She needs to lose 6kg (13lb) to reach her ideal weight of 4kg or 9lb.

However sister, Ink, has remained svelte and slinky.

Owner Caroline Dutton, 52, from Northam, said: “I don’t know why Pen has piled on so much weight. I don’t give her scraps or leftovers, although occasionally I will give them both a little bit of tuna or chicken as a treat.

“However, there is always dry cat food in their bowls for them to graze on all day and I think Pen was taking full advantage!”

Caroline said it was only during a weigh-in at the PDSA that she was told Pen was obese.

Now Pen’s size causes problems with her grooming and she struggles to jump up to high places.

“I would love for Pen to get slim and healthier and fitter, I’m determined to stick to her new diet. I’m worried that she could develop diabetes or heart disease,” said Caroline.

Pen’s six-month diet and exercise programme will be tailored and overseen by the team at Southampton PDSA Pet Hospital,

Jess Maidment, PDSA vet care assistant, said: “Pet obesity is an epidemic that is seriously impacting the lives of millions of pets across the country.

“As with humans, carrying excess weight has serious health implications for our four-legged friends. It can increase the chances of them suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening conditions such as arthritis, diabetes and heart diseases.”

The overall winner of the contest receives a year’s free pet food, a pet-friendly holiday, and a pet hamper.
