FREE “roadcraft” sessions are available to Southampton residents to help them feel safe riding a bike.

The lessons are aimed at those who can already ride, but need to up their skills for riding in traffic.

Part of the Big Bike Revival, which runs until July, the taster sessions are aimed at all levels and a bid to get more people out of their cars and feeling confident on the roads.

Freelance cycle instructor Eleanor van der Hoest said: “Cycling tuition aims to give you the knowledge and skills you need to become a road user on a bicycle.

“For example, understanding the best position in the road to cycle, or how to negotiate different types of junction. Knowing the foundations enables you to fly past traffic queues or travel serenely through the countryside. This in turn will increase your fitness, confidence and wellbeing. Cycling is the future – don’t get left behind.”

She added: “Our roads will be more agreeable and people-friendly when more people travel on bikes, which means fewer cars. It’s important that cyclists follow current best practice for problem-free cycling.”

The two hour taster sessions are for all levels of fitness - and specialist clothing is not required. The sessions will take place on quiet roads near Southampton Common on July 13 from 6 to 8pm, July 15 from 10am to 12pm, July 15 from 10am to 12noon, July 23 from 6 to 8pm, and July 28 from 10am to 12noon.

Participants must bring a roadworthy bike, and must be confident in handling it.

If you don’t have one you can hire a YoBike for the session .

Private one-to-one lessons are available at a cost.
