GIRL power in Southampton helped to raise thousands of pounds for pioneering cancer research in what is believed to have been the first Race for Life in the area.
The women’s race at the Royal Victoria Country Park on July 20, 1997, attracted hundreds of people from across the South.
The competitors were helped on their way with a mass aerobic warm-up before taking part in the challenging 5km race.
The cash raised by the event supported the Imperial Cancer Research Fund who raise money for studies into cancers that affect women.
The race was one of a number of similar events organised across the country.
