A SOUTHAMPTON school will reopen after "substantial floods" caused its closure yesterday.

Staff were left shocked after ceilings collapsed at Foundry Lane Primary School, on Foundry Lane on Sunday night.

It caused significant damage to carpets as well as valuable school resources, which were much loved by the children and staff.

Bosses at the school were forced to close the premises following the damage to its Year R and Year 5 classrooms, corridors and communal areas.

The incident also left structural and electrical damage, which lead to the school being shut to pupils and the cancellation of a planned sports day.

But thanks to the hard work of staff, parents and the wider community coming together in the clean-up operation, the school will open its doors once more today.

Parents co-ordinated groups to be on standby to help; school staff mopped, scrapped and filled countless rubbish bags to ensure there would be no further disruption to the students' education.

All years groups will be back in class today, except Year R students who will return to school Wednesday, but will not be able to use their classrooms again this term.

A spokesperson for the school said: "Thank you to everyone who has made offers of support to help us clear up and rebuild the areas affected in school.

"We are truly touched by people’s generosity of spirit and hard work in the immediate aftermath of our flood.

"Our school value of 'Community' and motto of 'Working Together' have shone through at such a challenging time.

"We would also like to thank our incredible staff team who have really pulled together to get the school back up and running, along with our children, you really are our biggest asset."

The school added that it was unsure of how much financial damage was caused or what the cause of the incident was at this stage.

There will be an extensive program of repairs and redecoration over the summer break and the school welcome any offers of support replacing much needed resources.
