A SOUTHAMPTON builder was caught drink-driving after he crashed an electric scooter on busy dual carriageway, a court has heard.

Jamie Donowa was riding an electric powered GoPed, which can reach speeds of up to 15mph, when he crashed with a car on Tebourba Way in Southampton.

Police arrived at the scene and spoke to Donowa, who then punched one of the officers in the face.

The 30-year-old was injured as police detained him and taken to hospital, where he was tested and found to be almost double the drink-drive the limit.

Southampton Magistrates' Court heard how the incident began when Donowa went to take his children back to the home of his ex-partner, in Millbrook.

Prosecutor Jessica Price told the court how Donowa's former partner said he appeared intoxicated.

She said as Donowa left, he climbed on top of her new partner's Land Rover and began jumping up and down.

Ms Price said: "He climbed on the bonnet of the vehicle and smashed the entire windscreen.

"He then jumped on the roof and repeatedly jumped up and down, causing dents.

"This was witnessed by the next door neighbour."

The court heard that Donowa then left the area on his GoPed, which he crashed on Tebourba Way.

Ms Price said when police arrived, Donowa "took a swing" at an officer, who was struck in the side of the face.

Donowa was taken to the floor by the officer, suffering a hip injury in the process.

He was treated at Southampton General Hospital, where a blood sample was taken.

The results showed he had 153 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The drink-drive limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Appearing in court, Donowa pleaded guilty to criminal damage, drink-driving and assaulting a police officer.

Representing himself in court, Donowa said he had mental health issues, which he said he was "getting to the bottom of".

He also claimed his ex-partner had been screaming at him prior to the incident, which had sent him "into a rage".

Magistrates ordered the commission of a pre-sentence report into Donowa, who will now be sentenced on April 3.

Donowa, of Millbrook Towers, Southampton, was granted unconditional bail and temporarily banned from driving until the next hearing.
