It's not often you hear the words "World Premiere" and "Southampton" in the same sentence.

So there was a definite buzz in the air as the audience settled down to watch last night's opening performance of The Snow Queen.

The English National Ballet chose the Mayflower as its venue of choice to premiere this lavish production.

And it really did feel like we were being treated to something very special.

Based on the Hans Christian Anderson story, the gothic style ballet is set to Prokofiev's score, performed to spine-tingling effect by the full Orchestra of English National Ballet.

A special mention must go to Czech-born Daria Klimentova, the prima ballerina who dazzled in the star role as the evil Snow Queen.

It felt like a privilege to watch the 64-strong company made up of dancers from across the world.

The ballet tells the story of two friends Kay and Gerda who find themselves battling against the wicked queen.

Not everyone knows the story, but as it unfolds it is easy to follow, the mesmerising performance drawing the audience in.

In front of what looked to be a full house, the spectacular fairytale world came alive to glittering effect.

Wearing stunning costumes studded with Swarovski crystals, the graceful dancers made the art form look effortless to an awe-inspiring degree.

Against a backdrop of twinkling lights and beautiful scenery, The Snow Queen was truly an amazing winter wonderland of a show to behold.
