Avro 748 makes its first flight at Woodford. The twin turboprop airliner powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart engines was sold successfully world-wide, both for airline and military transport service.

British Somaliland gained independence from the United Kingdom before uniting with former Italian Somaliland to create Somali Republic.
June 28
An explosion in Six Bells Colliery, Monmouthshire, killed 38 miners.
