STEVE McClaren was today fired as England manager.

The decision came after the Football Association held an emergency board meeting following England's dismal failure to qualify for the European Championships.

It has also been revealed that assistant coash Terry Venables has also been sacked.

At a press conference today the FA said there would be a "full root and branch examination of the England senior team set up".

Millions of fans were left devastated after England's 3-2 loss to Croatia at Wembley Stadium ended hopes of the team playing in next year's tournament.

It is the first time England have failed to qualify for the Championships since 1984.

McClaren had refused to resign in the immediate aftermath of last night's defeat.

But, while he declined to discuss his future, the 12-man FA executive sat judgment - and their verdict was widely expected.

It was reported at the weekend that a seven-three vote had already been taken to remove McClaren from his post, although this has been denied by the FA.

The 47-year-old former Middlesborough boss took over as national team coach in summer 2006 after former Brazil boss Luiz Philippe Scolari turned town the job.

During his time in charge England have played 18 games, won nine, lost five and drawn four.

Speaking after last night's match, McClaren insisted he will not resign despite England's failure to qualify.

He said: ''I'm not stepping down.

''Ultimately I take responsibility and I accept that.
