BINMEN in Eastleigh have ditched strike plans after reaching a compromise over working practices with council bosses.

The decision to end the industrial action will mean up to 20,000 bins currently sitting unemptied on the district's streets will now be cleared away.

Refuse collectors in the borough voted with an overwhelming majority to cancel industrial action following crisis talks with Eastleigh Borough Council this morning.

Under the agreement the binmen will continue to work under the Task and Finish principle which they were fighting to protect, but they have come to a compromise regarding overtime payments.

UNISON branch secretary, Dave Smith told the Daily Echo: "Negotiations went very well and I am pleased to say that we have decided to end our industrial action.

"We have spoken with our management and come to a working arrangement which we are very happy with."
