AN EASTLEIGH road has been closed after a bus burst into flames.

Southampton Road in Eastleigh is closed in both directions due to a bus fire.

The fire is near the junction with Derby Road and traffic delays are building in the area.

Thick black smoke can be seen across Eastleigh as fire crews battle the blaze.

A witness said: "We were coming over the bridge and I just saw this thick black smoke.

"The bus was in the distance and we could see huge flames reaching up, all we could smell was burning rubber.

"Then the fuel tank must have caught up because it sounded like a bomb had gone off.

"We watched the bus melt, it happened so quickly.

"There weren't any ambulances there so I am really hoping no one was on it."

Due to the close proximity to the railway lines, South Western Railway has said that all trains are running at a reduced speed which may cause delays.

A spokesperson from Eastleigh Police said: "We are currently assisting colleagues from the fire service who are dealing with a bus fire at the junction of Derby Road and Southampton Road in Eastleigh.

"No passengers were on board when the bus caught alight and no-one is believed to be injured at this time.

"We have put road closures in place while the incident is dealt with.

"The following roads are affected: Southampton Road, Chestnut Avenue, Derby Road, Market Street and Campbell Road.

"We expect these roads to be shut for some time, so road users should plan a different route.

"We are also urging all members of the public to avoid the area while we deal with this."
