A ROGUE wave has damaged the Southampton-based cruise ship Artemis as she battled against gale force winds in the English Channel.

The towering wave crashed over the ship's bow in the early hours of this morning hitting the anchor storage area and forcing the ship to change course and head for the shelter of the Cornish port of Falmouth.

A P&O spokeswoman said the ship was due to leave Falmouth later tonight after repairs were complete.

"The damage was only minor and was restricted to the anchor storage," she said.

"The damage does not affect the safety of the ship in any way, but will require some work beforecontinuing into the Atlantic."

The ship had already been delayed leaving Southampton for a 36-night cruise to the Caribbean following this week's bad weather.

Poor buggers can you imagine being couped up with a load of strangers for 36 nights?

Why people go on cruises is beyond me. Trapped on board a ship, what happens if you get bored and want to get off?

You wait until in docks in the next port, get off for the day and then rejoin in the evening. Its quite a novel idea really... it may even catch on

Love it, so they stop at port for the day, then get rounded up like school children to be told, I know you're having fun but we've got to go?

Sod that, I like to do what I want to do, when i want to do it!

Is a freak wave like a Mexican wave?

Someone should stop these freaks and rogues from waving at ships, then we wouldn't have these problems

Nothing like a mexican wave. You have to stand there like a freak waving your hands in the air!

You use it to see a bit of lots of different places, and go back another time if you'd like to see more. Places like Monaco can be enjoyed within 1 day, whereas I would probably go back to Barcelona and Lisbon.

As for putting up with people for a long time - I take your point, but usually there are enough different rooms, restaurants and decks that you can move away from people you find you don't like.

Oh, and you get told to be back on board by a certain time, but if you aren't then they do actually leave without you. If you're crew, you're sacked (usually) and if you're a passenger, you can catch up with the ship at the next port, at your own expense.

I agree with Sandra Gidley, freaks and rogues should not wave at ships, they should be content with waving at each in the house of commons

I like cruising on small
ships but imagine the large ones with 4000
passengers and the queue
to get back onboard through the security
scanner at each port

They still have a plank handy for numpties like you!

Any cruise can be enjoyed in whatever way you wish.

If you are a social type, then you will enjoy the whole atmosphere with wide variety of entertainment, port excursions and much more.

If you are a 'loner' then you will stick to your own company etc

It's called personal choice. Easy

How about we use all the ships to put our prisoners on? Thats a much better idea, send them out on a cruise ship and leave them in the middle of the Ocean!

Now I bet nobody else thought of that!

The surroundings are the same, nothing to look at, but plenty inside to do, playstations, amusements, internet access etc. Brilliant idea!

I believe that there used to be a prison ship just off Millbrook Point in the early 20th century

There was also a rogue wave in Spain today as well.

Were there any offshore quakes.

May well have been and underwater landslide, too.
