THE ANNUAL Christmas market will not be returning to Southampton this year, organisers have announced.

There will be no market or unique flying Santa experience as WELA Märkte, who run the market, confirmed they will not be returning to the city.

Leader of the council Cllr Satvir Kaur described the decision as "hugely disappointing".

She said: "We have been working closely with them on this year’s event since February, so the timing of this announcement is particularly frustrating and unexpected.

"Despite the short notice, we are now working very closely at speed, with city partners to see what alternatives could be put in place to ensure that Southampton continues to have an exciting Christmas offer this year for local residents, visitors and businesses.

"I’m pleased the ice rink, a family favourite, is back this year for example, alongside other events and activities.

"If you and your business want to be involved with this year’s Christmas in Southampton, please get in touch."

Despite this decision, residents can expect other festivities.

The city will still boast its traditional festive Christmas lights and a free switch-on event will be organised for November 17.

Santa may not be flying over the city centre but he will be making an appearance at Tudor House.

People can also get festive at Southampton City Art Gallery and SeaCity Museum with Christmas activities for all the family, from wreath making to fun history talks.

And of course the ice rink is returning to Westquay.
