A CAR has burst into flames in an "unexplained" incident in Southampton.

The white Hyundai on Burlington Road has been taped off by police.

Emergency services were called out at 2.09am on Wednesday.

The cause of the blaze is currently unexplained, police said.

A 19-year-old student, who lives in the area, said: "I was quite surprised to see the car this morning, but I don't think it was anything nasty.

"It looks like a fault with the engine or something as it's only the front of the car that went up.

"Glad no one was hurt and the fire was put out quickly."

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 2.09am on Wednesday 23 November by our colleagues at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service making us aware of a car fire on Burlington Road.

"We attended and have spoken to the owner of the vehicle.

"The cause of the fire is currently unexplained and the incident has been filed at the current time. This will be reviewed should any further lines of enquiry become available."
