SOUTHAMPTON residents desperate to beat the economic chill are being promised a warm welcome at venues across the city.

The city council has joined forces with other organisations in the area in a bid to tackle the cost of living crisis and provide support for those struggling to make ends meet.

Family hubs at the seven Sure Start centres are determined to help parents with children aged five or under.

They are offering family support, information and advice on childcare, volunteering, training and job opportunities, as well as "learning through play" opportunities.

She said the cost of living crisis was hitting a variety of families, not just those on low incomes or Universal Credit.

"It’s often families that have mortgages and are really struggling because they now have no disposable income," she said.

Laina, a resident who accesses the support available at Clovelly Road, added: "It’s just like an after-school club, we come straight here and it’s something for them to look forward to. It’s really nice.”

He said: "It’s about giving a sense of community to local groups that might not have that. We’re supporting some of the most vulnerable people and families in our city.

“We are very, very aware of the cost of living crisis.

"Energy prices are going up, food costs are going up, rents are going up and [so are] mortgages. So we’re acutely aware of the pressures some people are facing."

The council leader, Cllr Satvir Kaur,  added: "We know individuals and families are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

"It's why we’re ensuring we have a warm welcome for those that need it, providing places within local communities where people can go.

"This is one of several initiatives we have introduced so that there is a safety net for our most vulnerable during these challenging times."

A cost of living online hub created on the council’s website includes what is available locally in Southampton and from central government. To access the information go online and visit southampton.gov.uk/costofliving.
