HOSPITAL volunteers are on a mission to raise funds for Southampton Hospital Charity UK.

Five volunteers from Southampton General Hospital are racing from Edinburgh to Southampton to raise hundreds of pounds.

The money raised will be invested in the staff wellbeing area of the emergency department.

The hospital's current wellbeing area is small and can only accommodate a few people.

And the volunteers are hoping that the money raised will help convert the department's old staff room into a new wellness area, which will give them more room to move and instal facilities.

Rachael Hains, a patient tracker from Southampton, said: "I’ve worked in Southampton General Hospital for the last ten months.

"My role takes some of the administrative pressure off the clinical staff and helps assist with flow through the department.

"Every day I watch my colleagues lead with kindness and patience.

"It doesn’t matter how tired they are, they show up smiling.
"I am in awe of everything they do, and I want to do something to support them."

The team is aiming to raise £2,000 and will embark on a 400-mile venture.

So far, the team of volunteers has raised £970.

Rachel added: "Our current well-being room can only fit two people in at a time, so we want to convert our old staff room into a new well-being area.

"It has more room and kitchen facilities that will allow us to sit down with a cup of tea and do a proper well-being check.

"There is also a small garden space outside, but it is also in need of an update to make it usable for staff.

"This is so important as there are little to no windows in the emergency department, and when working long days, just having that little break outside makes a world of difference."
