THESE great grandparents are this week looking back on 70 years of happy marriage - with telegrams from two monarchs.

90-year-old Margaret and Tom Weller, aged 89, raised a glass to toast their platinum wedding anniversary at home in Sholing.

The couple, who have four children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, were delighted to receive a message of congratulations from the new monarch King Charles III, ten years after his mother Queen Elizabeth II helped them mark their diamond wedding anniversary.

The Wellers, who celebrated on January 17, lived all over the globe before settling in the family home, which was bought by Tom's parents in 1947.

Daily Echo:

Tom joined the British Army in 1948 as an apprentice in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Margaret, nee Metcalfe, joined in 1951 as a clerk in the Womens Royal Arms Corps.

Daily Echo:

They met in a pub in Guildford in 1952 and were married in a low-key ceremony in a registry office in Surrey before taking up a first overseas post in the Middle East.

They returned to Bordon and started a family. Eldest Sam was born in 1957, twins Peter and Paul followed in 1959 and youngest Hayley was born in 1970.

As a family, they were posted across the world including Kenya, Germany, Singapore and finally Iran where Tom had a role teaching the military how to maintain their tanks. He retired as an Artificer Sergeant Major.

Daily Echo:

Once settled back in the UK they moved into the Sholing house they have enjoyed for decades.

Tom has always been very active, particularly enjoying golf and other sports, and Margaret is described by her loving family as sociable.

The secret to their long and happy marriage is family. They have travelled the world and had to lay foundations for their family many times and, for them, home is being with the people you love the most wherever you might be.

Daily Echo:

Margaret and Tom are a strong team and they adore being the heads of a big family.
