IT'S 60 years since The Beatles first played in Southampton and fans are being encouraged to get their music memorabilia from that and other historic gigs valued at a special event this weekend. 

Tracks, the Beatles and music memorabilia specialists, are holding a valuation day at the Holiday Inn in Herbert Walker Avenue on Saturday (April 1) between 10am and 4pm.

The market for music memorabilia is now worth millions.

Material relating to the 80s icons Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson can reach stratospheric prices with a Prince owned or used guitar fetching up to £235,000.

The signatures of The Beatles can reach in excess of £5,000 with album sleeves autographed by the fab four valued at £15,000 to £20,000. An album signed on the front cover by Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix can realise over £10,000.

Vintage concert posters from the 1960s relating to the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix or a poster from the 1970s relating to Led Zeppelin can raise around £10,000.

Punk memorabilia of the Sex Pistols and the Clash can raise £2000 to £3000.

Handwritten lyrics,  clothing, instruments, awards, personal effects and record company promotional items from any major group or artist are also of interest. 

Tracks are offering free advice and valuations and are also interested in buying items relating to any major artist or band.

The Beatles performed in Southampton on three occasions, the first time in May 1963 at The Gaumont, now Mayflower Theatre, as part of the Roy Orbison tour. They performed Some Other Guy, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Love Me Do, From Me To You, Please Please Me, I Saw Her Standing There and Twist And Shout.

The Beatles returned to the Gaumont Theatre for a second time in December 1963, the last date of their 1963 autumn tour. Their final Southampton engagement took place the following year, again, at the Gaumont Theatre as part of their 1964 British tour.

Other high-profile names who performed in Southampton during the 1960s and 1970s included The Rolling Stones (September 1965), The Who (April 1966), Jimi Hendrix (April 1967), Led Zeppelin (January 1973), and Queen (November 1975).
