Firefighters tackled a car fire on a Southampton motorway last night.

Crews from Redbridge and St Mary’s were called at around 6.30pm to the vehicle fire on the hard shoulder of the M271 northbound carriageway.

Twenty emergency calls were made to the fire service reporting the blaze.

The fire was extinguished but the vehicle sustained severe damage.

One casualty was assessed by paramedics before the fire service left the scene shortly after 7pm.

Police were also called to the fire at 6.40pm.
