A traffic warning has been issued ahead of Southampton Football Club’s Football League Championship fixture against Sunderland this afternoon.

Saints are playing at St Mary’s Stadium for the first time since a fire at an industrial unit postponed their previous fixture against Preston North End on Wednesday night.

Southampton Travel – the Southampton City Council and Balfour Beatty Highways partnership – has informed followers on X that roads in the city will become busier before and after the 3pm match due to ring road works in the city centre.

This comes after the north and west sections of the ring road which encompasses East Park and Watts Park, have been closed since February 5, while work is carried out to redesign the route, that will see new and improved lights installed, designed to speed up traffic.

The roadworks are expected to last until the summer, and are currently operating under a one-way system.

A spokesperson for Southampton Travel informed followers on X: “Due to our ring road works in the city centre, the roads will be busier before and after the match with supports making their way to and from St Mary’s Stadium.”
