The 2024 Superyacht UK Young Designer competition officially commenced last week on March 14.

Hosted by Superyacht UK, British Marine and Sunseeker International, the launch event took place at Sunseeker's Showcase in Poole.

Imminent design experts from the University of Plymouth, Staffordshire University, Southampton Solent University and Bournemouth University were present at the event, along with a group of MSc students from Southampton Solent University.

At the start of the day, guests had an opportunity to network over breakfast before Chair of Superyacht UK, Mr Ben Geary welcomed them.

The itinerary was then elaborated by the Course Leader - Yacht Design Portfolio at Southampton Solent University, Mr Giles Barkley.

Guests were offered insights into Sunseeker's yacht manufacturing process, which included conceptualisation, design, engineering, and interiors, all articulated by Ewen Foster, the Chief Technical Officer, and Adam Wheeler, the Head of Design Operations & Engineering Management.

Post-lunch, attendees were beckoned to Sunseeker’s main shipyard for a thorough run-through of their manufacturing process, followed by a tour of their completed yachts.

This year's competition is split into two categories: one for 2nd and 3rd year students and another for Master's students.

With 12 spots up for grabs, applicants should submit their meticulously hand-drawn designs to specific briefs during the two-day event at the Southampton International Boat Show, scheduled for September 16-18 2024.

Simon Hedley, head of commercial partnerships at Marine Insurance Specialist, Pantaenius UK, said: "I was very pleased to see how Superyacht UK and Sunseeker are looking to the future to nurture new talent into the superyacht design sector with the launch of this competition.

"It was a real privilege to witness the whole process from concept and design to all aspects of the manufacturing process, most of which is being carried out by in-house skilled staff.

"I wish all the students the best of luck with the competition and with their future careers in our precious industry.”

Prizes for winners and runners-up in each category will soon be announced.

Entries must be submitted to Superyacht UK by April 30. Successful candidates will be notified by Superyacht UK.
