A first aider 'pinched' a man’s lung in a bid to save his life after he was stabbed, a jury was told.

Quick-thinking Sophie Louise Mansbridge rushed to the aid of Ben Glasspool who lay in a pool of ‘thick blood’.

Miss Mansbridge was at her home address in Laburnum Road on October 26 of last year when she heard a commotion outside, jurors heard.

Daily Echo:

Southampton Crown Court was told how Miss Mansbridge heard a man – now known to be Mr Glasspool – pleading with a ‘hooded boy’ to ‘leave me alone’.

The prosecution say the hooded boy is the 16-year-old defendant who is on trial for attempted murder.

Giving evidence in court, Miss Mansbridge told jurors how she looked outside her window and saw a samurai sword in the hooded boy’s hand.

"It was larger than the boy’s legs," she said.

Rushing to her front door, her mobile phone in tow, Miss Mansbridge said the boy "swung with intent" at Glasspool.

She said: “It did not look like there was any fear in the swing; he knew what he was swinging for.

“He was swinging profusely and delivered about six blows. On the fourth blow the sword got stuck in Glasspool – it vibrated as it went in him.

“For me, that was the moment I knew those injuries were going to be dangerous.

“The sword was then yanked out of Glasspool’s body.”

Jurors heard how Miss Mansbridge saw the defendant – who cannot be named for legal reasons – deliver a couple more blows after a car "screeched up the road", stopping at the scene.

She then heard a woman demanding the teenager to "get in" the vehicle before ‘speeding up the road’.

Miss Mansbridge said Mr Glasspool tried to run away, but soon collapsed.

She said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and I still can’t believe it.

“I saw Glasspool go down on his left side and when I approached him, his t-shirt on his right side was pumping, that’s the best way I can describe it.

“I was pinching his lung and asking people around me for a hair tie. My hand was in the victim’s body. I could see his ribs and they were cut through.

“All the neighbours rallied together that night to help him.“

The trial continues. The boy denies attempted murder.
